Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water – Review-

smashbox9

I was anxious to try this sucker. If you remember, Smashbox has sent everybody and their mother this “primer water” and of course, everyone was raving about this product. After this, it was ABH liquid lipstick, Makeup Geek foiled eyeshadows, Cover Fx drops (I hope some of you are smiling right now!!!). The marketing (products) exposure was very obvious … Unfortunately because I’ve been burned in the past, I don’t trust the big “Beauty Gurus” anymore (Don’t throw stones at me, there is some exceptions).

Since I try to be more careful about my purchases, I research a bit more and not to be cheesy I read posts (Go bloggers Go) or l Iisten to YouTubers who have less than 50 000 followers.

Enough blabbering let’s do this review:

Product description: (From Smashbox website)

Get the benefits of priming, hydration, and sheer radiance with this all-in-one Photo Finish Primer Water. Free of silicone, alcohol, and oil, it’s packed with revitalizing electrolytes that work to reawaken skin and restore moisture. This enriched water instantly absorbs into skin for lasting hydration, leaving skin looking refreshed and ultrasoft while it locks in makeup.

The GOOD :

♥ No alcohol and no oil; for somebody like myself who has a very acne prone skin type this is a must. (It didn’t cause any breakouts yay!)

♥ Love the smell, very refreshing (delicate and subtle).

♥ It really helped my foundation look dewy and fresh. (Perfect for hot summer days, I put mine in the fridge for a more cooling effect !!!)

♥ Somehow it really hydrates my skin really well.

The Not so GOOD:

♥ Pricey ($$$) 32$US (37$CND) for 3,9oz.

♥ It doesn’t work well for filling in pores, if it’s what you are looking for. (I myself add a pore minimizer just on my nose area where I have some enlarged pores)

Bottom Line:

If you’re looking to smooth out fine lines and hide pores, this isn’t the best product for that purpose. If you’re looking for a quick fix that will hydrate, prep your skin for all-day makeup wear or use it to refresh your makeup, this water might just be your new best friend. But in the end, it’s a good facial mist with a hefty price tag that I don’t regret buying whatsoever … Time will tell if I buy a second bottle.

So for the question: Really worth the hype? Yes and No … It’s not the best for priming the skin that’s a given, but I prefer this water compare to Urban Decay’s All Nighter as a makeup setting spray. It’s perfect for summer months, and NO I don’t consider it like FANCY water as some have stated.

Hope it was helpful my beauties

  1. Well it’s a good thing I didn’t buy the full size but I think I’ll really like it for the summer. Honestly, I tried this too just to see if it’s worth the hype. Looking at it up close, I thought they just slapped smashed box on the bottle, put water in it and smacked a hefty price tag on it lol. Great review overall. At least I know what not to use it for.

  2. But it is true, the big YouTube gurus are PAID to push products onto us! You can just spot all the brands / products each month since all of the big name gurus are suddenly talking about the products – it’s very apparent! I hate it!
I actually never heard of this product until I saw it on your blog LOL! 😛
I like just about any spray type toner with glycerin in it to prep my skin – then I follow up with a serum that contains hyaluronic acid. The combination of the 2 helps to plump my skin so foundation goes on smoother.

    1. 😳 Such an interesting combo, I really do have to try this one! (Thanks!)
You know I’m not against girls (and guys) receiving stuff for free (Yay! for them), but DISHONESTY is the thing I hate the most in life 😠
You never heard of this product, because your “beauty” brain is also on a No-Buy 😉
      Have a great day xo’s

  3. Thank you for such a thorough review. I agree with you, it’s a tough call these days with new product releases…you’re never quite sure. I was somewhat interested in trying this but I haven’t yet. Maybe I’ll purchase the mini size and give it a whirl. 🙂

  4. I couldn’t agree more with you! It is so freaking hard to know what to trust and what not to trust in the YouTube and blogging world. That’s why I love sephora because you can always return it!! I’ve been looking for a new setting spray but have been so iffy about this! I’ll have to give it a try. Thanks for the HONEST review😊

    1. Awww! Thank You☺️ … Honesty to me is the most important thing, as we can often notice some YouTubers don’t mind at all giving great reviews to crapy products 😠
I really like the Smashbox Primer Water as a setting spray … You should also consider Mist & Fix from MUFE, it’s also a very good one !!!
I agree with you that Sephora return policy is just the best, I’m not shy when it comes to returning stuff that I don’t like because I spend so much ($$$) at their store 😜
      Thanks for your comment xoxo

      1. Ah yes! They really do. Sometimes I’ll buy products and I’ll be like they were clearly paid because this was awful!! I actually have a little sample of the mufe setting spray and use it for special occasions! It’s GREAT! My makeup really does last all night with it.

    1. 2 OMG !!! Well, you will like it as long as you don’t expect this water to act as a regular primer !!! The fridge does the trick for me 🙂

  5. Oh wow based off your review this is soooooooooooooo not worth it too me. IMO, if it can’t help with fine lines and pores then what is it’s purpose!? To moisturize? That’s what moisturizer is for. To refresh? I have a $3 elf spray that can do that (I am totallyyyy putting it in the fridge too now after your suggestion! Never thought of that!!).

I agree with you on the the hype everything was really, really obvious. I too prefer youtubers with fewer followers. No stone throwing here, hehe 🙂

    1. Good points (Now I want to return it!!!😬) 3 months ago we could have thought that it was the 8th wonders of the world 😜
Living in Florida you should have an e.l.f spray laying around in the fridge at all time! Glad to be good on your wallet xoxo

      1. Nope, I have the SKindinavia setting spray which is also great. But it takes ages to get through a bottle, MUFE will be next when I finally finish it. xx

      2. I really like it 😀 It is my first setting spray, so I can’t really compare it to anything but that stuff is good! Bought it for a wedding and it truly does make your make up last all day 😀
