7 Makeup Do’s For Women Over 40

7 Makeup Do's For Women Over 40

I don’t want to burst anyone’s bubble but starting at the age of 35, women are unfortunately entering the dreadful “mature skin” category. Jeez I HATE the word mature 😣 !!! So at fortyish, I can vouch that my skin has changed and that I now know the tricks that keep me looking somewhat youthful (in my humble opinion that is).

I’m lucky that people always think that I’m 5 to 10 years younger than I really am (no Botox, fillers or face lift YET 😏). I’m attributing all this good fortune on my makeup since with a bare face, I look my age for sure. “Au naturel”, I have a ton of wrinkles but still manage to look youthful.

Disclaimer: As always, feel free to agree or disagree. If your thing is matte purple lips and extra full coverage foundation, have fun with it my friends. I’m just sharing what seems to look the best on this old gal face!

Today, I’ll focus on makeup and soon, I’ll do the same for skincare…

Aging Beauties
Elizabeth Hurley | Age 52 (Fresh Makeup Look)

1.

Light Coverage

Throw in the garbage all your full coverage mattifying foundations right away since they age us like crazy. I understand that with “maturity”, we deal with sun spots, redness and all kind of weird stuff but still, a natural finish is the way to go. Even a tinted moisturizer will do the trick. Try it for a week and you will never return to a matte, mostly cakey foundation that makes us look 10 years older.

Side note: I now apply only half of the amount of foundation that I used to. Try it, you’ll thank me later…

2.

Dewy Finishes

With the exception of blushes and eyeshadows, matte finishes should be banned when we get older. Go instead with dewy formulas, gold bronzers or glossy finishes. One of the few perks of getting older is that our skin gets dryer by the minute so all the satin/dewy stuff doesn’t look greasy anymore. Finishing powder like the ones from Hourglass also gives a fresh glow.

3.

Cream Products

For some reasons, cream products have always had the worst reputation. Years ago, the formulas were not that great but lately, brands have definitely step up their game and brought us cream products that are to die for. Cream contour, bronzers, highlighters and cream blushes are an older gal BFF. These newer formulas are so darn good that you don’t even have to powder them.

Side note: RMS Buriti Bronzer should be on everyone Wishlist ASAP!

4.

Less Powder

Pilling powder products are a sure way to age yourself. These days, I BARELY set my T-Zone. Skipping a lot of extra unnecessary powder is the key to get that glow from within. Baking should be a thing of the past!

Tip: A setting spray or a simple spray water (Evian type) takes away the dreadful powder look .

5.

Matching concealer

I used to buy only concealers that were 1 to 2 shade lighter than my foundation but lately, I find that matching my concealer colour with my face suits me way better. The aging eye area shouldn’t be emphasized and BTW, the popular Instagram triangle method of application is a sure No-No for mature women (it’s even a bad thing when you’re 20). As previously mentioned, the baking method should be a thing of the past too; a swipe of setting powder is all we need.

Tip: Applying your setting powder with a damp beauty sponge creates a flawless finish if you really like to set your concealer.

6.

Sheer & Glossy Lips

I know that the world (I mean most of all makeup aficionados) are against lip glosses! Yes, they are reminiscent of the 80’s, but the truth is that sheer lipsticks and glosses are WAY MORE flattering than bold lips. Don’t take my word for it, try it yourself! Only a few  can pull those dark red lipsticks or bright pinks over 40 and don’t get me started on those dark beiges or browns. The darker our lip colour, the thinner our lips look!! Inversely, the glossier they are, the fuller they appear. Remember, a fresh face is a youthful one!

7.

Matte Eyeshadows

Aging, droopy and more hooded-by-the-minute eyelids don’t go well with foiled, glittery or metallic shadows. Mattes are more suitable since we certainly don’t want to emphasize our crapy eyelids. Don’t get me wrong, I find it very pretty to apply a shimmery matching shade on my mobile lid but glitters or rainbow vivid colors all over the eyes look almost clownish at our age.  As a test, do one eye with an all matte look (with little shimmer if you desire) and the other using non mattes and see the difference! It’s HUGE…

Let me know if you’ve discover other must-have tips or try any of these. Remember that 40 really is the new 30…

New Sephora Favorites Give Me Some New Lip | Review

Since my transition to cruelty-free, I’ve been eyeing this new Sephora Favorites Give Me Some New Lip value set! Thanks Sephora for offering a set made of all CF products. Upon receiving it, I thought these shades were definitely out of my comfort zone but I was to test each and everyone of them with an open-mind. Could this be the beginning of a new daring Ingrid or a disaster in the making?

New Sephora Favorites Give Me Some New Lip | Review

Huda Beauty Lip Strobe in Snobby

(a semi-sheer metallic light pink base with pink and gold pearls)

Pros:

Smells delicious, just like vanilla cake batter,

Super long wearing for a lip gloss,

Feels very comfortable on the lips – not sticky at all.

Cons:

If you have dry/chapped lips, this gloss will emphasize the dryness and it will look horrible,

It doesn’t fade well which leaves your lips with lots of glitter particules,

It’s doubtfully daytime appropriate – the colour is unorthodox & the shimmer is obvious.

Bottom Line: It’s ok but I wouldn’t buy a full size! I feel I’m getting too old to wear these shimmery glosses that are very reminiscent of the 80’s and honestly, who wants to relive these years, makeup wise that is. The only way to make it look pretty is over a lip liner that I’ve applied all over my lips and then put a little bit of this Huda Beauty Lip Strobe on the centre.

Marc Jacobs Beauty Le Marc Liquid Lip Crayon in Night Mauves

Pros:

Super creamy & long wearing (transfer proof),

This particular color is a very flattering NUDE that is perfect for my light skin,

It’s not a full flat matte,

It fades really beautifully,

NO need to apply a lip liner as the product doesn’t bleed,

Very pigmented – you need just a tiny swipe.

Cons:

A lip gloss to top it is a must; it tends to dry my lips,

The product smells & tastes really funky,

The formula is so soft, it makes it fragile and unstable in the container/stick.

Bottom Line: I honestly bought this set for this new Marc Jacobs Le Marc Lip Crayon and it fell flat for me. It’s nothing out of the extraordinary. I’m not impressed and again wouldn’t buy another shade, mainly because of the debatable aroma. Formula wise, it’s pretty solid and the shade is really pretty.

Smashbox Always On Metallic Matte in XO in Vlada

(metallic rose gold)

Pros:

Smudge proof,

Long wearing,

Intense vibrant Metallic Rusty color (if you enjoy that type of shade),

It smells super yummy and doesn’t have an after taste,

It fades well and not patchy at all,

The application is very smooth.

Cons:

It’s drying my lips like crazy (to be fair all liquid lipsticks that I have tried are doing this),

This shade looks super cheap on me.

Botton Line: I HATE the colour; it looks so awful on me. The formula is not bad at all and I can see why the matte version has great reviews. If you enjoy matte lip products, you should consider this one from Smashbox.

treStiQue Mini Plumping Lip Balm in Barbados Berry

Pros:

Smells minty fresh,

Glides easily on the lips,

Very pigmented for a lip balm.

Cons:

It’s more brick red than a berry color,

No plumping effect whatsoever,

It’s not super hydrating; it feels like your average lip balm.

Bottom Line: I really would have enjoyed this balm if the shade had suited me better. Cute packaging but a random product at the most.

Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipstick in Candy Venom

(electric pink)

Pros:

Super sleek packaging,

Beautiful deep bright pink,

Full coverage  & very creamy,

Very comfortable on the lips as it’s non drying.

Cons:

Like any matte formula, if your lips are not moisturized prior to the application, it will emphasize the dryness.

Bottom Line: I’m very impressed with the formula but this particular colour is so far from my comfort zone that I wouldn’t wear it, EVER. That being said it’s one of the best matte formula I’ve ever tried. Simply Beautiful.

The value for money of this set is amazing; alone, the Marc Jacobs Lip Crayon is 34$ (this set costs 33$CND). My problem is not with all these new formulas but with the colours that are not flattering on my fair skin or just don’t suit my personality. If you are contemplating this new Sephora Favorites’ set, you should have a look in-store to see if it’s a right fit for you.

As you know, honesty is the best policy, and unfortunately this one will be going back to Sephora ASAP. I wish Marc Jacobs Le Marc Liquid Lip Crayon in Night Mauves didn’t smell or taste so bad. Sadly, this set will be the first one ever that I’ll be returning. Oh well, they just cannot be all winners! This set was curated for women with darker skin tone.

Note: The swatches look way better than how they individually look on my lips!

My Lifestyle Goals| 2018

My Lifestyle Goals| 2018

Like my Blogging year, my life in general suffered in 2017. Last year was like a perpetual fall into the abyss in terms of health, so I really didn’t enjoy those 365 days because I was hurting all year. Juggling between medical appointments and exams, trying medications like a guinea pig and without any results, it took a toll on my happiness, my motivation & my usual drive. Frankly, I need to reconnect with the things I used to passionate about, so much so that lots of changes need to happen in 2018.

Health

Being healthy again is my #1 priority. I will need to change a lot of things after my operation mostly to control my weight and to alleviate my feet problems (plantar fasciitis). I also need to start a proper workout regimen to help my insomnia. Fortunately if there are no complication, the endometriosis + fibroids & permanent bloating should be a thing of the past at the end of January and I will now be able to focus on getting back in shape. I need to prioritize my health and doing so, why not start blogging about it? I may help someone along the way…

Travel

After such a lousy year, it made me want to live my life to the fullest. I really want to travel even if it just means discovering new places within my own province. BeardMan and I share a dream about creating something, a reference guide about all our hiking experiences across Quebec and New England area. When we look on the web, we always see the classic hikes but we have so many interesting regions to share, with different landscapes and climate, wonderful wild Provincial and National Parks, it needs to be recorded somewhere… Corsica, Hawaii, Walt Disney World again in 2019 & a road trip from California to Nevada are already planned for the coming years, and some smaller venues to visit in-between. In 2018, I want to discover my own back yard, specifically the wonderful Province of Quebec.

Cook More & Share my Best Vegetarian Dishes

I’ve never been a good cook (maybe it’s one of the reasons that BeardMan has now a small belly), but the foodie inside me wants to learn new easy recipes, experiment, and share them. I absolutely adore these 5 ingredients, basic recipes that are good for you and good for the soul. My desire is secretly to make BeardMan enjoy my lifestyle! He likes and craves meat but I would really like to have a positive impact on his life too.

The pleasure of being healthy and contented is also to have someone to share our passions and happiness. Changes in my life will surely positively impact my boyfriend. The last year was also hard on him; he’s standing tall, undaunted through all my hardships, sorrows and mood swings while he still has to manage his career, his own challenges and heartaches. Regaining control of my life will undoubtedly make his life easier ❤️
