My “Beauty Collection” Goals | 2018

My

I thought I would use the word GOALS instead of resolutions since these never stick anyway. Goals seem more empowering, don’t you think? Beauty-wise, 2017 has been the most interesting year ever: due to my low-buy (look at that, a resolution that worked 😉), I managed to purchase only 3 products from January to the end of October 2017! Then, the VIB sale came and although I did some serious damage, I only bought the items that I needed or REALLY wanted! That transitional year needed to happen since my makeup & skincare collection was ridiculously out of control.

2017 was also the Year of Decluttering: to get rid of 80% of my entire collection was eye opening to say the least. I now enjoy my small (but practical) collection composed of products that I LOVE and that work for me. Still, when BeardMan looks at our bathroom cupboards or vanity, he still thinks that I have a ton of stuff but, now, he can get out of the shower without stepping on a brush, a box of unplaced products or Sephora bags still untouched…

Here are my 5 Beauty Goals for 2018

Quality over Quantity

I don’t want to accumulate a large makeup & skincare collection EVER AGAIN. I was disgusted when I had to throw in the GARBAGE thousands of dollars of barely used beauty products and I SWORE it would never happen.

No More than 5 Items in the Same Category

The makeup addict that I am will still want the best of the best cruelty-free products but  my goal is, at the end of the year, to own no more than 5 items in a same category (Smaller/Deluxe formats don’t count). The only exception is for eyeshadow palettes; I don’t think I can declutter as much to only have five left.

Declutter further More

Since I just mentioned the D word again, I need to declutter at least 10% of my collection. If I want to achieve my goal to only have 5 products in each category, this new wave of decluttering needs to happen and I frankly can’t wait to do it.

Stay Away from the Sales

When reflecting on how I accumulated so much stuff in the past, I always reach the same conclusion: it’s not because it’s on sale that I need to buy 10. I swear I had no need to buy any shampoos, bath products or body creams for the last 3 years and I still don’t believe that in 2018, I will achieve using all the products that have been gathering dust in my bathroom. One backup product is PLENTY and I’m ok with paying the full price if needed instead of pilling products! Anyway, I always want to try new stuff anyway…

Note: Oniomania?!? Does that ring a bell? Oniomania, from greek words Onios – For Sale & Mania – Insanity, more commonly known as Compulsive Buyer Disorder, is characterized by an obsession with buying and shopping…

Writing the Purchase Date on Every Product

I absolutely need to write a purchase date on all makeup & skincare items to remind myself to use them or to know when to throw them out. Even if I don’t always follow the expiration guide on makeup products, I don’t want to apply something I had for more than 3 years for makeup and one year for skincare. Now, I try my very best to choose skincare that have an expiration date on it so it’s easier to rotate between products.

As you can see, I’ve adopted my minimalist “Beauty” collection with serenity and enthusiasm. Seriously, I can’t wait to buy a new eyeshadow palette every year, use it up as much as I can, throw it out and purchase another one for the following year. In 2017, decluttering the first item was the worst but after that first step, I couldn’t stop decluttering. My new MOTTO is: If I haven’t use an item for the past 6 months, it’s maybe time to declutter it!

Disclaimer: If you are wondering why I throw all this makeup in the garbage it’s simply because no family members or friends wanted them. 95% don’t wear makeup and the ones that do are still stuck with the load of products I gave away the year before. I also tried to donate it to charity but all women organizations that I’ve contacted don’t take “used” beauty products! This is the sad part about my decluttering…

Makeup Declutter Series 2017| Eyeshadow Palettes

Makeup Declutter Series 2017 | Eyeshadow Palettes

Bye-Bye to 10 Eyeshadow Palettes…

I’m a little sad about discarding these eyeshadow palettes. All of them contain good quality shadows (except maybe Cargo that is just so-so). My hoarder genes made sure that these palettes all made it through last year’s decluttering, but this year, I’ve decided that enough is enough and keeping them just to gather dust on my shelves is stupid so, it’s time to let them go and focus on better ones that I want to use up (or at least try to)!

Once again, they will end up at my niece and she’ll do what she wants with them; I guess she’ll be sharing with her friends or maybe just throw them away.

Decluttering is very hard and frustrating but when my mind is made up, I feel very proud and content to move on. In the future, I would like to only have a maximum of 5 palettes at a time, and rotate. Honestly, who needs more anyway (it’s not like I go out every night). Realistically in 5 years, I should get to this goal ! It’s not every year that I decide to let go of 10 upscale and unused palettes, but it has to be done and after this massive decluttering, I kept “La Crème de la Crème” and still own about 30. My entire collection will be featured in future posts after all this decluttering is done.

So it’s 🎶“So Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, Good Bye”🎶 to 10 palettes! I am still heartbroken of letting go two of them: Urban Decay’s Femine Palette and Stila’s In The Light. Their quality is impeccable but the UD one is kinda old (AC/DC will always be my favorite purple color ever) and the packaging on Stila’s looks so cheap that I forget to use it.

Note: I didn’t swatch or show them more since the majority of them are no more available…

Makeup Declutter Serie 2017| Nails & Lips

Nails & Lips | Decluttering Series 2017

Feast your eyes folks, it’s the very last time you see such a large amount of decluttering on this blog. Every single item shown here is going right into the trash since lip products are disgusting to pass along, and my friends and family  don’t seem remotely interested in my nail polish collection. I understand though, I’m not one to be that keen on accepting used makeup!

I went through all kinds of emotions when I was selecting product that I wanted to remove from my stash for my annual decluttering. First, I was mad at myself to have bought all these items without using them more than once. Second, I was ashamed to have wasted all that money on unused products (lesson learned… it will never happen again), and third, I felt relieved that my collection will now be considerably smaller.

Bye-Bye to 56 Nail Polishes…

unknown-17

For someone who only paint her toe nails and apply a clear polish on her hands, it really seems absurd to have so many nail polishes. After looking at every one individually, I finally kept 65 bottles (which is still way to much) and I fully intend to do another decluttering at the end of the year.

My ultimate goal is to have only 10 bottles at any given time, maybe 5 summer shades and 5 winter darker tones. I pretty much know the colors that I like and frankly, they are always the same, season after season, no matter the trends. Greys, greens, reds, blacks and yellows are not my favorites and somehow, I found a way to buy a ton of them in the past. I  also got rid of most of the glitter polishes too since they are a pain in the butt to take off and anyway, I’m getting almost too old for all that glitters! On the other hand, the shimmer ones are still very welcomed 😉

Bye-Bye to 57 Lip Products…

Makeup Declutter Series 2017| Nails & Lips

2017 is the year where there is an urgency to pan as much lip products as I can; what will remain of my collection at the end of the year will be thrown away since every item at this point will be more than 2 years old. Again, I want to apply a simple rule to my lip product stash: only have 3 lip glosses and maybe 1 or 2 lipsticks; that will be plenty for me. 5 instead of a hundred will be some major change! I kept 46 lipglosses and lipsticks to enjoy in 2017.

You have no idea, how happy and relieved it was to get rid of all these lip products that I haven’t used for the past year.

So here it is… Next stop will be eyeshadow palettes !
