Best of 2015 | Skincare & Makeup Brushes

Ingrid's Best of 2015 Skincare & Makeup

Totally my “favorite” post to make EVER. These are my BPF (Best Product Forever) that I will repurchase over and over – ’til something better comes along I mean 😊. At first, I wanted to feature at least one product in each category but the truth is that I may like a lot of products but in this yearly favourites it will only be “the best of the best” (for me anyway)!!!

I enjoy blogging so much that to label myself as a lifestyle/beauty blogger, I had to purchase a few items during the year. Let say that it did some damages in the wallet: I’m totally assuming it and unfortunately, it forced me to try an outrageous amount of product. So much so that, weirdly enough, some products have never been reviewed during 2015. Those first-rate products will do appear on my blog in the coming weeks.

So without further ado let’s talk …

Skincare

Nightime

Ingrid's Best of 2015 Skincare & Makeup

Philosophy Purity Made Simple

Part of my nighttime routine, this cleanser is the first step to purify my skin. I say first step because I always double clean (if you are suffering from acne please try double cleansing your skin and add a Clarisonic brush type, you’ll thank me later !!!). I love Purity because it’s super gentle on my skin and it beautifully takes off the first layer of my makeup and all the residue from my eye makeup removal.

Peter Thomas Roth Anti-Aging Cleansing Gel + My Clarisonic

I love this cleanser because using it with my Clarisonic makes my skin squeaky clean without ever drying it. As I prefer formulas that produce a nice foaming effect with my Clarisonic, this PTR product is perfect and smells really nice before going to bed.

Kate Sommerville Eradikate + The pimple “extractor”

My breakouts are less frequent but they unfortunately still happen 😤! When they do and mostly they’re white heads, I use the extractor and then dab dots of Eradikate all over (Remember you are going to bed afterward because it is not the most attractive look; but this stuff is super effective).

Origins Clear Improvement

I really try to be good and do at least a mask once a week! I really enjoy this charcoal mask from Origins. I really do feel like it actually cleans my pores.

Algenist Complete Eye Renewal Balm

For me, a good night cream is one that gives me lots if hydration. At night, I swear by my Algenist Complete Eye renewal Balm. I sense that it makes my eye area look less puffy in the morning with my perpetual lack of sleeping.

Note : As you can see, there is no mention of an eye makeup remover or toner because I’m still on the hunt to find good ones. As for serum or oil night cream, I used quite a few along the year but they eventually all broke me out. I’ve been testing the Paula’s choice Resist Skin Firming Line Minimizer for a while now and to date, I’m quite impressed. I cross my fingers that my skin doesn’t become sensitive to this formula.

Daytime

Origins GinZing Eye Cream

A lot of good eye creams are not makeup friendly, some even makes my concealer look cakey or flaky. This Origins GinZing Eye Cream is like the Holy Grail for me. It adds the moisture and nourishment that I want in a daytime eye cream. It’s really the best first step to any eye makeup, period !!! Greatness across the board…

Mario Badescu Oil-Free Moisturizer SPF 30, Shiseido Oil-Free Urban Environment SPF 42 & Peter Thomas Roth Max Oil-Free Sheer All Day Moisture SPF 30.

If you have a sensible or an acne-prone skin type, you know that finding a good moisturizer containing a good SPF factor is a pain in the pimple. They almost all break me out. For years, I’ve neglected this step because my face looked like a strawberry field  when using any sunscreen. The result is that I have premature wrinkles and sun spots. Botox and Laser here I come, financed by BeardMan (but shh!, he doesn’t know yet!!). Now I wear SPF EVERY day, even if it’s raining!! These 3 are fabulous: the Mario Badescu & PTR are especially good without interfering with the loads of makeup products I put on top.

Makeup Brushes

Makeup Brushes Cleanser

Dr Bronners’s Magic Soaps

Ingrid's Best of 2015 Skincare & Makeup

AMAZING! This soap cleans my makeup brushes like no other. All good natural ingredients, cruelty-free, affordable and it comes in a variety of scents. Seriously, if you haven’t try this product, you’ll be so please to see your white bristles become super white again. I will never use something else. A 16oz bottle lasted me a year. A must!

Makeup brushes that I use EVERY SINGLE day I wear makeup

I do own a ton of brushes that I like but in this favourite post, I will just show the ones I use daily and cannot live without. ALL ARE AFFORDABLE!

Real Techniques

Ingrid's Best of 2015 Skincare & Makeup

Powder Brush

In summer when I use a ton of bronzer to achieve a somewhat JLO glow, I use this brush to apply it …

Blush Brush

Again the perfect brush to apply my bronzer. No so much for Blush purpose however since it’s too big for my taste.

Contour Brush

Since I prefer a soft contour, this brush makes it perfect to define without having an obvious line across your cheeks.

Deluxe Crease Brush

This brush popularity speaks for itself. I use it on my crease and mostly to apply my MAC paint pots. I have 4 of them. Again, Holy Grail status all-around…  A must !!

Base Shadow Brush

This is such a multi-purpose brush, it’s perfect to define the outer V, the crease or the lower lashes. I own 5 of them and use them daily.

Flower Beauty

Ultimate Powder Brush (F01)

I always use this brush without adding any product to buff any harsh line that would still be noticeable on my face.

Ultimate Eye Shadow Brush (E01)

Again, I use this lovely brush to buff any harsh line in my eye makeup. I love how soft it is. Totally a finishing touch eye brush.

Note: I don’t understand why there is no hype about these fabulous brushes. Even after 6 months of weekly cleansing, they still look brand new. Unbeatable for under 10$.

e.l.f

Flawless Concealer Brush

The perfect 3$ brush to dust my undereye powder that I use while baking the area.

Anastasia Beverly Hills

Brow Brushes #12 & #14

My brows are only as good as the brushes I used. Paired with my ABH DipBrow Pomade, it’s magic for my brow.

Anna Sui

Brow Brush 2

Perfect to apply brow powder. Nice bristles for a precise flawless application.

bdellium tools

785

This one feels like a breeze when applying my base shadow…

776

Blending extraordinaire. Such a great brush to … obviously blend.

714

Since I always use eyeshadow to line my upper lashes, this brush is perfect to push product to tight lines.

i on beauty

Angle Blusher

Weirdly enough, I use this beauty to apply (with pressing motion) my loose powders or foundation finishing powders. It’s so dense and wonderful…

Cala

Complexion 412

I began to enjoy my Hourglass Ambient Powders when I purchase this stippling super soft brush. It diffuses the product like no other! Highlighter’s BFF

Japonesque

341

My favourite to smudge my upper or lower lash liners. Superb!

Sonia Kashuk

Ingrid's Best of 2015 Skincare & Makeup

#29

My #1 blush brush. Perfect size for a perfect application.

Note: As you can see, these are all affordable. I’m sure that all the Marc Jacobs face brushes and the Haikuho-do ones are to die for but these do a wonderful job … for now.
Note2: BeardMan often jokes that I should try painting as a hobby with the quantity of brushes I own… Maybe when I’m old and retired but for now, I prefer applying makeup than coats of paint… One thing is certain though, I will have a lot of practice handling brushes!!! 😂
Welcome 2016 and new favorites to come !

Where are they now ?⎟ My 10 most used beauty products of 2014

As I continue to grow into an assumed beauty product addict, I’ve added to my collection a lot (did I say A LOT!!!) of new products in 2015. Unfortunately, adding products also means neglecting other … With year end getting closer, I wanted to revisit my 10 most used beauty products of 2014 and let you know what happened to them in 2015. Let’s take a trip down memory lane…(See my original post HERE!!!)

top102014

  1. real Techniques brushes: The love fest is still very strong, I ADORE these brushes. I own a lot of RT brushes and I can honestly say that out of all of them, there is just two I don’t care about. If you haven’t try them, you are missing out. Affordable, cruelty-free and I can’t see myself not using them ever.
  2. e.l.f. HD Lifting Concealer: I still use this concealer from time to time, but I’ve venture onto other products that offer lighter shades, more suitable for my skin tone. It won’t be this year’s favorite but this product is surely worth trying because of the awesome smooth formula & the little price tag.
  3. e.l.f High Definition Powder: Still using this one daily or e.l.f High Definition Undereye Setting powder to set (or bake) my concealer. Sometimes, the micro shimmer is a little annoying but it’s not really noticeable. At less than 3$, why try something else when this super product is working beautifully.
  4. Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara: I’m still loving this mascara so very much, even tough I’ve added some other products equally as good to my daily routine. I can’t see myself not having this mascara in my collection!!!
  5. Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer: I don’t know what happened in 2015 but I’ve stop using face primer. On rare special occasions, if I do prime my face, it’s the Veil Mineral Primer or the Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation oil-free Primer. During the wintertime, I prefer using the Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Hydrating Primer. Simply put, laziness caught up with me when it came to priming my face; I need to start using them ASAP.
  6. Too Faced Sun Bunny Bronzer: Guilty!! I bought so many bronzers in 2015 that I haven’t touch this one at all this year and it went all the way to the end of the drawer!  To be honest, I forgot about this one. Other brands/products will be in my 2015 favourite list. Stay tuned (If you have followed me all year, I’m sure you already know the 2 I’m talking about!!!)
  7. Benefit Cheeky Sweet Spot box o’blushes: This is by far THE best set (palette) I bought in the 2014 Holiday season. Benefit launched a similar set this year that is already for sale, I highly recommend you buy this one!!! (Psssst! This one is still a favorite & most used)
  8. COVERGIRL Ready Set Gorgeous & ANNABELLE Skin True mix with Revlon PhotoReady: Well, I did like a lot the Ready Set Gorgeous but at the end of the tube, I was tired of the pinkish undertone, that I didn’t repurchase (and won’t repurchase). Annabelle Skin True is my Holy Grail foundation; I hope the company never discontinue this foundation. For the Revlon PhotoReady, I really like this one but I will try other products when I finish my last bottle. In 2015, I was on a quest for finding the perfect foundation, and I’m still looking … I have such a weird skin type/tone, that it’s really hard for me to find the right texture for the right finish.
  9. (& 10) Too Faced Chocolate Bar & Too Faced Semi Sweet Chocolate Bar: I don’t know how to say it, but I haven’t touch these in 2015 for one not so good reason: I bought so many new eyeshadow palettes that these two palettes are placed in a way that I don’t really see them in my makeup organizer (lame but true!!!). I’m sure I still love them and I will surely buy the Too Faced Chocolate Bonbons palette coming soon, but I also want to try/use those that caught my eye in 2015 … even tough I’m sure I will find a way to still buy a few more in 2016 😔

Awww! It was so fun to revisit these old favourites ! What was yours ?

June Hits & Misses

IMG_2715

I can’t believe that June is coming to an end! Seriously, time flies like crazy. In the wonderful world of makeup we already start to see fall collections making their debut. Why! Why? Let us enjoy the mint greens, the corals, the barbie pinks! Let us be bronze goddess for a while longer. So without further ado,  here are my Hits and Misses for June 2015.

HITS

IMG_2723

Smashbox #SHAPEMATTERS palette (you can read my full review HERE). I’ve read some really bad critics on this palette and I can understand them if you are someone with a darker complexion. For my pale self, this palette is to die for. That is going to sound funny (maybe a little shallow) but everytime (more everyday since I received it)  I’ve played with it, I find myself looking in the mirror during the day and I feel pretty (you all know what I mean; we all have bad makeup days and very good ones). Each product in this palette is perfect for me.

IMG_2722

IMG_2717

Lise Watier RIVAGES collection (The eyeshadow palette & the bronzer). The surprise of the month for me. Lise Watier is not usually my brand of choice but these 2 products have totally taken me by surprise. You can read my full review HERE. The palette looks like nothing really, but it’s a total hidden gem. I’m not kidding – I used this beauty so much that there already are some dents in many of these eyeshadows. Now on to the bronzer – this little number have been sold out everywhere for good reasons, it totally delivers what a good bronzer should do : add glow and some structure to your face (structure, not to be confused with contour because this is definitely not a contour product).

Note: Summer collections always mean that very soon, you will see big sales on the remaining items. For this RIVAGES collection, you HAVE to buy the palette.

Note #2: The Rivages bronzer makes a hell of a good transition shade for your eye makeup look (Double Duty calls for a double yay!)

IMG_2718

Dr. Hauschka Lip Care Stick. I have dry lips! We know all to well that this is a problem with all the trendy Matte lipsticks popping everywhere. I feel like Dr. Hauschka’s Stick really moisturizes my lips; it feel like a treatment on my lips rather than just clear gloss like some products.

IMG_2720

NYC Expert Last Lip Color in 446 (Smooch). For less than 2$ you cannot beat this formula (You can read my full review HERE) and particularly in this shade, which is so gorgeous. I’m telling you this stuff is almost too good to be true. Highly recommended !!!

IMG_2721

Sparitual nail polish in Winds of Change. This was a new find for me, I’ve never heard of this VEGAN brand before. Since we all know that nail polishes stays on my hands for a mere 24 hours, I’ve been loving that sheer pink/coral/golden sparkles  colour makes it tough to notice when it starts to chip (yay!). I just love it !

IMG_2719

Josie Maran Argan Illuminator. I’ve been mixing a pump of this product with my foundation to add dewiness. As much as I don’t like to use this as my highlighters I totally love the subtle effect it gives my skin when mixed. On the plus side this formula is not greasy at all.

MISSES:

IMG_2716

Real Techniques Bold Metals Collection Brushes (#200 & 201). I have profess in the past my love for Real Techniques regular brushes so when Beard Man went to Ulta and the Bold Metals brushes were on sale, I’ve put these two on the list. As much as I think the design is really pretty, the brushes themselves are just OK. I don’t feel the same love as for their regular counterparts. They are nicely made and everything but I’m just NEVER reaching for them in my day-to-day makeup routine. 😢Sadly not a fan!

Have a great Weekend
